Sustainable Festive Giving: How to Keep Making a Difference

Food insecurity doesn’t take a holiday.

Millions of South Africans rely on consistent access to nutritious food every day. One-third of all food produced in the country goes to waste, while countless vulnerable people go hungry. This is why year-round support for FoodForward SA is so important.

As South Africa’s only registered food bank and a certified member of the Global Foodbanking Network, we connect over 2,500 vetted Beneficiary Organisations to quality surplus food from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers, distributing 83 million meals in 2024/2025 and reaching 935,000 people daily at a cost of just R0.50 per meal. More than 80% of this food is nutritious, supporting health and wellbeing while reducing the environmental impact of food loss and waste.

Sustained donor support is the backbone of our work. Monthly donations provide stability, allowing us to plan, source efficiently, and ensure Beneficiary Organisations can continue their vital work across the country. Your regular support strengthens communities, protects vulnerable people, and ensures every surplus meal finds a purpose. By giving consistently, you become part of a global movement dedicated to alleviating hunger and reducing food waste, making your generosity count long after the festive season ends.

Festive Food Boxes: A Tradition of Care

Our Festive Food Boxes offer a simple and tangible way to support families in need. Each box provides essential, nutritious food for the holiday season, reaching communities that rely on our network every day. The need is especially acute during the festive season, when learners lose access to regular school feeding schemes.

This festive season, you can also give a gift in someone’s honour. Instead of spending R500 on a Christmas gift, pay it forward by gifting a Festive Food Box to a family in need on their behalf. It’s a meaningful way to celebrate generosity, show someone you care, and make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable South Africans.
