We are proud that The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) has featured FoodForward SA and Food Gardens Connect in its global More Than Food storytelling series, which highlights how food banks around the world create lasting impact that extends far beyond providing food.
The video features Nonina Pama, a participant at the Sinethemba Ithemba community garden in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, whose journey demonstrates how access to nutritious food, practical skills and community support can help transform lives.
Today, she is not only growing fresh produce but also helping lead the garden that has become such an important part of her life.
Her journey reflects the purpose of FoodForward SA’s Food Gardens Connect programme. By supporting community food gardens with training, resources and ongoing mentorship, the programme strengthens household food security, builds resilience and empowers people to create lasting change for themselves, their families and their communities.

Food security is about more than a meal. It is about restoring dignity, improving health, creating opportunities, and enabling people and communities to thrive.
Being part of The Global FoodBanking Network allows these stories of impact from across our programmes to reach a global audience. We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase the difference FoodForward SA’s Food Gardens Connect programme is making through the More Than Food series.
Watch the video to hear Nonina reflect on her journey in her own words.
