Some of our Beneficiary Organisations (BOs) in the Western Cape, which form part of the Food Gardens Connect programme, are proving this by using wooden crates donated to FoodForward SA by Balancell Energy to grow fresh produce, and the results are nothing short of inspiring. The crates, previously used to import tech equipment, now repurposed, are making a real impact where space is limited.
Crates, Buckets, and Creativity: Growing Solutions Anywhere
Take a closer look at these food gardens and you’ll see how innovation meets necessity. Crates, usually seen as packaging or storage, have become mini farms producing spinach, tomatoes, peppers, and other fresh vegetables. The secret? Crates retain moisture far better than soil alone, meaning veggies grow stronger, stay fresher, and keep more of their nutrients. Once BOs saw the difference, many began choosing crates over traditional planting methods, especially in areas where land is scarce.
But here’s the beauty of it – you don’t need crates only. Buckets, tubs, or just about any container can be converted into a vegetable garden. With some creativity and care, backyards, courtyards, and even balconies can be turned into food gardens. It’s a practical, affordable way to boost food security right at home.
