In the heart of Colville, Kimberley, a beacon of hope quietly pulses through the community—offering warmth, compassion, and practical support to those who need it most. The Shaine Griqua Advice and Development Centre is more than just a drop-in hub; it is a safe space, a sanctuary, and a symbol of resilience, particularly for the LGBTQIA+ community and others facing deep economic hardship.
Founded in 2012 by close friends of the late Shaine Griqua—an esteemed patron and tireless human rights defender—the centre carries forward a legacy of inclusion, dignity, and unwavering care for the vulnerable. What started as a grassroots initiative has grown into a lifeline for hundreds of individuals and families.
Meeting Urgent Needs with Dignity
Recognising the devastating effects of poverty in the area, the centre has expanded its services well beyond its initial focus. Today, it offers an integrated range of outreach and support programmes designed to uplift and empower. These include:
- Daily food and clothing distribution to those living in extreme need
- Sanitary pack drives, ensuring dignity and health for women and girls
- Reading coaching to support youth development
- Basic health advice and referrals, connecting individuals to vital services
- Individual and group counselling, offering emotional and psychological support
But one of the centre’s most remarkable achievements lies in its growing food security programme. As a beneficiary organisation (BO) of FoodForward SA, the centre serves between 250 and 400 meals every day, providing not just sustenance, but comfort, community, and consistency.
A Shelter from the Storm
For those experiencing crisis—especially survivors of violence or abuse—the centre offers more value. It provides temporary overnight shelter, a crucial haven while law enforcement or social services are mobilised. These clients also receive a warm nourishing meal, while they try to work through some of their darkest in a caring and loving environment.
Building a Legacy of Compassion
At its core, the Shaine Griqua Centre is built on a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for. Through grassroots action, partnerships, and an unwavering commitment to justice and equity, the centre continues to grow its impact in the Colville community. As we reflect on its journey, one truth shines through: where others see only struggle, the Shaine Griqua Centre sees possibility. It is this vision that transforms lives—and it’s a vision worth supporting.
