FoodForward SA Responds to Humanitarian Crises

Floods in the Northern Cape

Imagine surviving years of drought, only to have your home destroyed by devastating floods. This is the harsh reality faced by the poorest of the poor in the Northern Cape, particularly those living in informal settlements. After enduring a prolonged drought, the province was hit by heavy rains that caused widespread destruction. The Karee-Dam in Calvinia reached day zero in February 2022 due to water scarcity and incredibly, reached full capacity on 15 June. Unfortunately, the overflowing rivers and increased water levels had severe consequences for vulnerable communities, leaving them in urgent need of assistance.

Partnership and Collaboration is Critical

KZN Tornado

On Tuesday 27 June, the residents of Inanda, Phoenix and the surrounding areas in Kwa-Zulu Natal had to brace for yet another challenge as a landspout, which resembles a tornado, struck the province. The violent weather event caused flooding, damage to homes and infrastructure and left hundreds of people displaced. After our MD Andy Du Plessis’ call to action, we received an immediate response from our partners Lactalis, Tiger Brands, Do More Foundation, Premier FMCG and OneFarm Share. We are collaborating with various social partners, including our beneficiary organisations Masisizane Service Centre and Red Cross Society, to provide daily hot meals to about 500 displaced residents seeking shelter in community halls.
