Food Lover’s Market, South Africa’s largest privately-owned retailer, has announced the triumphant results of their eighth Hunger Month campaign, which is held annually in May.
This initiative is a testament to the retailer’s commitment to “nourish and enrich lives” by providing meals to those in need through its extensive network of partners, including FoodForward SA.
FoodForward SA is deeply honoured to be a beneficiary of this impactful campaign since its inception.
Innovative approach raised 5 million meals
The 2023 Hunger Month campaign, running from May 1 to May 31, once again achieved remarkable results, raising an incredible 5 million meals! This success can be attributed to the retailer’s innovative strategy and the generous support of its partners.
Throughout Hunger Month, shoppers were encouraged to purchase a meal for just 47 cents – FoodForward SA’s cost per meal – at Food Lover’s Market till points. Even before the official launch, Food Lover’s Market had already secured over 2,978,723 meals through contributions from their legacy partner Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, grocery suppliers, and FreshStop.

Commitment from Food Lover’s Market stores to customers
The commitment from Food Lover’s Market’s individual stores played a significant role in this success, raising an additional 1,736,580 meals. Notably, the wonderful team at Food Lover’s Market Paarl contributed an incredible 205,783 meals!
In addition, 7,271 meals were raised through a Hunger Month fundraiser via the GivenGain platform. On 28 May, World Hunger Day, Food Lover’s Market matched all customer donations made on this day, adding 244,050 more meals to the total! Finally, Food Lover’s Market Holdings donated the remaining 40,647 meals, bringing the grand total to 5 million meals.

Hunger Month campaign an expression of community and collaboration
FoodForward SA is profoundly grateful to Food Lover’s Market, Tru-Cape Fruit Marketing, and all their partners for the extraordinary effort put into the Hunger Month campaign.
The 5 million meals will significantly impact the lives of food-insecure South Africans, including orphans, the elderly, disabled individuals, and vulnerable women. This campaign not only highlights the power of community and collaboration but also reinforces Food Lover’s Market’s dedication to making a tangible difference in the fight against hunger.
