In the Nyara Villages of Mooiplaas in the Eastern Cape, Nyara Youth Development (NYD) is creating a safe, structured space where young people can learn, grow, and believe in their potential.
Founded in 2021 by Robyn Mafanya, NYD responds to the challenges many children face, including limited access to quality education and a lack of safe after-school environments.
At its core is a clear belief: where a child comes from should not determine where they are going.
Consistent Support That Makes a Difference
Each day, between 90 and 130 learners attend NYD’s after-school programme, which combines academic support, psychosocial care, sport, and life skills.
The impact is clear. Teachers report improved focus and behaviour, while caregivers are seeing growing confidence, independence, and stronger engagement with schoolwork.

Why Food Support Matters
Through its partnership with FoodForward SA, NYD receives a consistent supply of groceries to support its feeding programmes. Additional partners, including Mensch and Woolworths, help extend this reach.
This enables up to 130 meals per day through the after-school programme and supports over 150 children each week through the Saturday soup kitchen. Access to food directly improves attendance, participation, and overall wellbeing.
Real Impact on the Ground
Attendance remains strong, with up to 130 learners participating daily. Children are showing improved academic performance, increased confidence, and more positive behaviour. The centre has become a trusted, stable space within the community.
One 10-year-old boy’s journey reflects this impact. He joined the programme, struggling with behaviour and emotional regulation. With consistent support and structure, he now shows improved self-control, better engagement, and more positive interactions. At school and at home, the changes are clear, with early signs of leadership emerging.
NYD’s work reinforces a key lesson: young people need more than academic support. Consistency, structure, psychosocial support, and access to food are what drive real, lasting change. Nyara Youth Development shows what is possible when the right support is in place.
Children should not be defined by their circumstances, and with consistent support, they can move beyond them.
