African Footprints of Hope: A Story of Resilience and Renewal

African Footprints of Hope Organisation, also known as AFOHO, was established in 2008. From the very beginning, it has focused on youth and community development. As a Non-Profit Company and Non-Profit Organisation, AFOHO is deeply committed to uplifting communities in a holistic way.

Based in the Eastern Cape, AFOHO supports various community kitchens in Raymond Mhlaba Local Municipality and Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. Over the years, it has run several developmental programmes that empower people and improve lives across the province. Their work is multi-faceted, always centred on strengthening communities from within.

AFOHO tackles a range of social, environmental, and humanitarian challenges through a diverse set of community-driven initiatives. Their work includes skills development programmes and job placement support for unemployed graduates, as well as regular clean-up efforts along the Tyhume River and in the local town.

They distribute school shoes and sanitary towels to children in need and provide food parcels to families facing hardship. In addition, they support various community kitchens and serve meals to the elderly, unemployed, and vulnerable individuals in surrounding areas. At the heart of everything they do is a deep commitment to restoring dignity, instilling hope, and creating lasting, meaningful change for those who need it most.

Since 2020, at the peak of COVID-19, AFOHO has been a beneficiary of FoodForward SA. Director, Nolitha Nkomana, says that this support has played a crucial role in assisting their organisation to provide meals to more people. During Mandela Month, when the spirit of giving is felt strongly, FoodForward SA’s contributions allow them to reach even more vulnerable individuals and families. It is about more than just a meal. It restores dignity, brings hope and reminds people they are not forgotten.

During Mandela Month, AFOHO steps up its efforts, amplifying community outreach and food parcel distributions in honour of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of compassion and justice. By transforming the symbolic 67 minutes into sustained action, AFOHO ensures his vision lives on – creating practical, lasting impact in the lives of those who need it most.

For AFOHO, Mandela Day is about giving selflessly and serving humanity to the best of their ability. They believe this should not just be something we do once a year, but a way of life every single day.
